When Apologists Take on Markan Priority: David Pallman vs. Laura Robinson

Recently, pop-apologist David Pallman attempted a critique of Markan Priority that did not go well. The problems with Pallman’s attack are illuminated in a stream on the YouTube channel Apocalypse Here wherein Dr. Laura Robinson joins Jon DePue (her partner) and Ethan from Spartan Theology. As Robinson points out, Pallman is seemingly doing something other than critiquing Markan Priority, at least as it is discussed in academia. To his credit, Pallman cites a range of academic sources, but his interest seems less literary-historical (what is the relationship of these texts to one another) as it is apologetic. (Also, what is up with that picture of Joel Marcus?!?)

The stream is pretty long but well worth the time to watch if you’re interested in redaction and source criticism. Robinson is always witty and wise, bringing to bear on the conversation an intimate familiarity with the subject matter (especially the Gospel of Matthew). And DePue and Ethan are excellent hosts, giving Robinson the limelight so that her expertise can shine through. (I should note that DePue is also highly educated and offers in this conversation his own insights on the subject. Ethan too notes places where Pallman’s work is contradictory and unsatisfactory.)

Enjoy!
