I contend that understanding the New Testament requires one to understand the Hebrew Bible. Not only do the New Testament authors quote directly from the Hebrew Bible, but there are frequent (and often subtle) allusions to it. For example, if you want to appreciate the imagery of the book of Revelation then you need to have read prophetic books like that of Zechariah and Daniel. If you want to understand the Gospel of Matthew then you need to have some familiarity with the Torah (i.e. Genesis-Deuteronomy). Yet many people who claim to be Christians have virtually no knowledge of or appreciation for the Hebrew Bible. That is frankly quite sad.
Below are some posts I’ve written on various topics related to the Hebrew Bible since starting this blog in 2017.
