With school back in swing here in Louisiana, I have more time during the day to listen to podcasts. (My backlog is over 50 episodes deep.) However, I do prioritize certain podcasts and some recent episodes from those have been fantastic. Here’s a brief rundown.
- “The Genius of the Gospel of Luke,” Misquoting Jesus with Bart Ehrman (9.5.23). In this episode Ehrman covers not only Luke’s sources (the Gospel of Mark and Q) but also the way Luke tells his story, highlighting themes and, in some instances, theological digressions. For example, Ehrman contends that Luke doesn’t have a theology of atonement but of forgiveness.
- “Bart Ehrman, The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture,” New Testament Review (9.5.23). Speaking of Bart Ehrman, Ian Mills and Laura Robinson covered a couple of chapters of his book The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture. They not only go over Ehrman’s arguments but they offer their own critiques as well as those of other scholars. They also manage to provoke jealousy because they spent time drinking beer in Ehrman’s home while they were at Duke University.
- “Laura Robinson, ‘Hidden Transcripts? The Supposedly Self-Censoring Paul,‘” New Testament Review (6.20.23). In this episode, Mills and Robinson cover a piece that the latter had published in New Testament Studies not too long ago. It pushes back against the idea that some of the language employed by Paul is coded as anti-imperial rhetoric to keep it from being detected by Roman authorities.
- “New Ways Through the Maze,” NT Pod (8.29.23). After over a year away, one of my favorite scholars is back producing episodes! And for his 100th episode, Mark Goodacre reminisces about his book on the Synoptic Problem entitled The Synoptic Problem: A Way Through the Maze. He talks about what he would do differently if he were to have a chance to revise it as well as an upcoming article he’s writing for the New Oxford Bible Commentary on the Synoptic Problem. It’s stirred me to reread Goodacre’s book!
Check these out and add them to your backlog. Hopefully it’s shorter than mine!
