The Roundup – 2.1.26

Abolish ICE.

  • Jordan Jones talks about recent archaeological work on Jericho, work that some have claimed corroborates biblical claims about its conquest by the Israelites. In short, it doesn’t.
  • Jordan Jones also recently talked to Mark Goodacre about Q.
  • Paul Clark has a view of Robert Price’s The Christ Myth Theory and Its Problems. From the final lines: “But it is a mistake for lay readers who want to learn about the origins of Christianity to take Price seriously. They should read Bart Ehrman, Paula Fredriksen or Geza Vermes instead.” I second that (especially Fredriksen).
  • Robyn Walsh talks about resurrection accounts in antiquity besides what we find in the New Testament.
  • An update on 2026’s reading tally!

Cool selection for the new round-up. The video on Jericho looked interesting in light of some of the recent claims that the historicity of the Joshua account was vindicated.

Thanks also for the link to the critique of Price’s take on Jesus mythicism (and another website from a thoughtful skeptic’s website to add to my favorites list.)

While I appreciate some of his literary criticism of the Gospels, Price’s persistent denial that there could be any historical figure behind the legends has probably hurt the cause of skepticism as much as the work of any apologist.

I absolutely agree about Price, but would add that he is quite the bigot as well. Just an odious person.

Alright, I came across excerpts on one website but haven’t seen him doing interviews or visited his own site. Thanks for the heads-up. (I’ve heard of the rude behavior of some of the mythicists.)

On the subject of ICE, did you hear about the one study that estimated less than 10% of the people getting detained actually have violent backgrounds? Speaking as a former conservative (now more of an old-school/classical liberal), if you had told me back in those days that this was to be the future of my (former) party, I don’t know I would have believed you.

    1. “Abolosh ICE.” Wait, hang on. Are you suggesting that a ballooning law enforcement agency characterized by relaxed hiring standards, abbreviated training, masked anonymity, armed unaccountability, promises of legal immunity, gaslighting leadership, ethnic profiling, and copious incentives to violate fundamental rights guaranteed by several constitutional amendments might not be entirely conducive to a free, flourishing society?

Anhoo, here’s a drone’s-eye view of how many of us spent yesterday evening in Minneapolis. (If you look really close, you might be able to see me in a purple glo-stick necklace, pedantically complaining to my wife that it’s not okay to fly a drone over a crowd like that.)

    2. The Kedem channel on YouTube should basically call itself the Ron Hendel channel these days. Outstanding new discussions about giants in the biblical tradition and historiography in the context of ancient literature.

Minnesota is so cold this time of year that it’s hard to believe anyone would get out to protest in any way. Kudos to you and your wife!

I’m hoping to watch Hendel’s recent video comparing Abraham with King Arthur. Looks promising!
