Back in late December, Dr. Lyn Kidson of Alphacrucis College in Sydney, Australia began a series entitled “Historical Notes on the Gospel of Mark.” As she notes in the first post, she’s not producing a commentary on the text so much as she is giving readers of Mark some historical background with which they can read this Gospel. She offers insights into things like the winter palace of Herod, the community at Qumran, the diet of John the Baptist, and more. The posts are brief but are worthwhile for those reading through the Markan text, especially for those of us who don’t have the requisite background knowledge for appreciating these ancient documents in their historical context.
