Back in June, the tag team of Josh Bowen and Megan Lewis (i.e. Digital Hammurabi) interviewed Hebrew Bible scholar Joel Baden on the subject of the authorship of the Torah. For a long time, it was assumed that Moses stood behind the books of Genesis through Deuteronomy, but with the rise of critical scholarship this view began to change. It was posited that there were four sources that were at one point in time compiled together to form the entirety of the Torah. Baden published a book on this very subject entitled The Composition of the Pentateuch: Renewing the Documentary Hypothesis (Yale University Press, 2012) which is not only a phenomenal read but also contains an extensive bibliography.
